PhD student
Nutritional Biomarkers Laboratory
Current work and interests
Raneem Almutairi is a PhD candidate in the Nutritional Biomarkers Laboratory at the IMS Epidemiology Unit, University of Cambridge.
Her research focuses on the interpretation and validity of functional nutritional biomarkers within complex metabolic systems. She is particularly interested in how physiological and behavioural context may influence biomarker responses and the implications this has for assessing micronutrient status in population health research.
Her work combines large-scale epidemiological data with biochemical, metabolomic, and phenotypic approaches, alongside statistical modelling, to investigate metabolic and biomarker relationships across different physiological contexts.
Background and experience
Before joining the IMS Epidemiology Unit, Raneem completed an MRes in Clinical Research (Human Nutrition) at Imperial College London. Her research, conducted in collaboration with St Mark’s Hospital, explored diet–disease relationships in gastrointestinal disease using dietary assessment, biological sample analysis, and statistical modelling, including NMR spectroscopy.
Raneem previously completed a Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Nutrition at Taibah University, graduating with First-Class Honours. Alongside her academic training, she held several student leadership roles and contributed to public health and research initiatives, including clinical research projects that resulted in conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications.
Prior to starting her PhD, she worked as a clinical dietitian and departmental supervisor, and was involved in health education and professional training activities related to metabolic health and research.
